Applied Behavior Analysis, or ABA, is widely recognized as a safe and effective treatment for Autism. This technique focuses on the principles that explain how learning takes place. During ABA Therapy, the Behavior Analyst examines a person’s strengths, weaknesses and behaviors to determine motivators and deterrents. Then, factors such as positive reinforcement are put into place to modify and develop certain behaviors. Through decades of research, ABA has developed countless techniques used to increase positive behaviors and decrease those that may be detrimental.
ABA Therapy has been endorsed by a number of state and federal agencies, including the U.S. Surgeon General and the New York State Department of Health. “In particular, ABA principles and techniques can foster basic skills such as looking, listening and imitating, as well as complex skills such as reading, conversing and understanding another person’s perspective.” (Autism Speaks)
